Fun Lesson Activity about The Seal

Objective: The objective for this lesson is for students to see how blubber in artic animals is an amazing way of keeping the animal warm.

Materials: A picture of a seal, plastic bags, a tub of ice water, vegetable shortening

Instructions: Show the students a picture of the seal and explain that their fins allow the seal to swim very fast and with a lot of power. They are carnivores and eat mostly meat. They also have a thick layer of skin called blubber, which can be 2 inches thick and the purpose of the blubber is for the animal to stay warm in really cold water. Fill one plastic zip lock back with vegetable shortening. Have the students put one hand in an empty plastic bag and have them put the other hand in the bag of shortening. The have them put both hands in the tub of ice water for a minute or 2. Ask them which hand is colder? This will illustrate how a seal’s blubber keeps it warm.
