Fun Lesson Activity about The Scorpion
Objective: To learn about fluorescence Materials: A black light, picture of a scorpion
Instructions: Show a picture of a black scorpion to the class and ask them if there is anything special that they notice. The class should talk about the claws and the tail and then mention that most scorpions have an interesting property. Tell the students that, under a black light, scorpions glow. Bring out the black light and turn it and show it to the students. Tell them that the black light actually emits Ultra-Violet rays, which are invisible to the human eye. Humans can see visible light but Ultra-violet light is not detectable by human eyes and has a strange effect of making things appear like they glow. The scorpions outer shell has a fluorescent chemical that is present in the cuticle. Give students different highlights with dark construction paper. Have them write secret messages to someone that no one else can read. Then use the black light for them to be able to see the messages clearly.
