Fun Lesson Activity about The Hedgehog

To make a hedgehog, first, gather enough pieces of egg-shaped styrofoam for each child to have his or her own. Lay the egg on its side and cut the bottom so that it is flat and can sit on a table without rolling over. Do this to each. Give each child an egg-shaped piece of styrofoam and a large handful of small wooden sticks. The styrofoam will be the body of the hedgehog, and the sticks will represent the spines of the hedgehog. Tell the children to stick the spines all around the hedgehog. As they do this, ask them if they know anything about a hedgehog’s spines, such as if they are poisonous or for what they are used. Then, explain to them that the spines are not poisonous and they are used to keep away predators. Also, share some additional facts about hedgehogs with the children. For example, they are nocturnal, they have a strong sense of smell and hearing, and they roll into a ball when they are in danger.
