Fun Lesson Activity about The Anteater

First, make an anthill for the anteaters to find food in. Get a small cardboard box and cut a hole about the size of a quarter out on the top. This will represent the anthill. Then, draw, color, and cut out small termites, ants, and fire ants. Place all of these inside of the anthill. Next, give each child a different size ball of sticky putty, and ask them to roll it out to look like a skinny snake. Some children should have smaller tongues than others, and some children should have really long tongues. Explain to the children that the sticky putty represents the anteater’s long, sticky tongue. One at a time, have each child use their anteater tongue to try and catch insects from the anthill by putting the tongue down the hole. If some of the paper insects stick to the tongue, have them put what they caught aside. Let each child try three times. After, have them count how many insects they were able to catch with their anteater tongue. Once all of the children have gotten a turn, ask them if it was harder or easier to catch bugs for the children with longer tongues.
