Fun Lesson Activity about The Red Tailed Hawk

The red tailed hawk has its name due to its brick colored tail, even though not all hawks have this feature. These birds prefer to spend their time in the open plains or deserts of North and Central America. These hunters have learned to stay perched high above their prey before they dive down to catch it. Hawks will go after many small ground animals including mice, squirrels or rabbits. Students can create their own flying hawks using construction paper and glue. First fold the construction paper in half. Then with the paper still folded on one side, using the folded side as the bottom, draw the head, rounded wings, and the tail of your hawk. Have students cut along this line with the paper still folded. Finally have students make one more fold along the line between the hawk’s body and its wings and it will be ready to fly!
