Fun Lesson Activity about The Crow

Objective: The objective of this lesson is to teach students about water displacement.

Materials: A vase or cup with a small opening at the top, marbles, water, and short straws

Instructions: Fill the vase with water to the point where the students straws cannot reach the water level inside the vase if they tried to drink. Tell the students that they are wandering in the desert and are dying of thirst. Suddenly they come up this vase of water but and straw. They must use the straw to drink the water but they cannot reach it. All they have are rocks nearby (place the marbles next to the students). Tell the students that they need to figure out how to drink or they will die. After some time, tell the students the story of the crow in the desert: The crow came upon a vase of water but couldn’t get its bill to fit down into the vase to drink. Being an incredibly intelligent bird, the crow proceeded to drop rocks into the vase until the water level was high enough to drink from. Explain to the students that by dropping marbles into the vase, the water level will rise in the vase. This is because of a concept called displacement. This means that the marble and water cannot occupy the same space, so if a marble is placed in the water the amount of water that fits inside that marble is displaced and the water rises upwards. Tell the students that this concept is very important for the physics of floatation.
