Fun Lesson Activity about The Squid
Objective: Illustrate the size of some sea creatures.
Materials: A picture of the Kraken from “Pirates of the Caribbean”
Instructions: Ask the students if they have seen the movie “Pirates of the Caribbean”. Ask if they remember the Kraken that is controlled by Davy Jones. Tell the students that while this is fictional, the animal is actually based off of the Squid, which is a very real animal. Squids come in all shapes and sizes and there are over 300 different species. There has been research done in the very deepest parts of the ocean and a crew in 2006 caught a giant squid on camera that was almost 40 ft. in length. Take the students outside and have them measure 40 ft. in length for them to understand the size of the squid. Then have the students draw a picture of a giant squid attacking a boat.
