Fun Lesson Activity about The Panther

Objective: To teach students about dominant and recessive genetic traits

Materials: a picture of a panther, a picture of a jaguar, four x four grids

Instructions: The purpose of this lesson is to teach students about dominant and recessive traits. Show the students the picture of the panther and the picture of the jaguar. Ask the students what they have in common. After some discussion tell the students that they are actually the same animal but that black panthers have a specific gene that makes them black (this is called malanism). Tell the students that the Black Panther gene is dominant. Each animal receives one gene from the father and one gene from the mother. Dominant genes will always express over recessive genes. Lets call the genes Black Panther (B) and Jaguar (j). The (B) is uppercase because it is dominant and the (j) is lowercase because it is recessive. If a panther receives the Black Panther gene (B) from its father and the jaguar gene (j) from its mother, it will be a Black Panther. The only way for the animal to be a jaguar is to receive two jaguar genes (j) from both parents. Table of Possible Cominations: BB – black panther Bj – black panther jB – black panther jj – jaguar Have the students fill in the following punnet squares to determine the possibilities for different offspring.
