Fun Lesson Activity about The Osmoderma
This activity is a great way to let kids be creative while they learn about osmodermas, or hermit beetles. First, collect enough empty toilet paper rolls for each child to have his or her own. Then, give all of the children a roll, dark brown, glossy paper, scissors, and a pen. Show them pictures of what osmodermas look like, and ask them to draw and cut out their own from the dark brown, glossy paper. Then, show them how to cut out a hole in the middle of the empty toilet paper roll. This will resemble a hollow tree trunk. Give all of the children green construction paper, and let them cut out leaves for the top of their tree trunk if they want. After all of the children are done making their osmoderma and tree, explain to them how osmodermas live their entire lives in the hollow of one tree. Share some other facts about them as well, such as they eat rotten wood.
