Fun Lesson Activity about The Orange Oakleaf Butterfly

Camouflage is an important adaptation many animals have in order to hide from predators. Ask students to notice what colors they are wearing. Then see if they can find anything in the room that they could blend in with. Explain how the orange oakleaf butterfly uses this same technique to hide from birds that may try to eat them. These butterflies are found flying in the forests of Asia, India, and Japan. When its wings are open there is a bright orange and black design, but when it closes its wings it looks like a dried leaf. Since it is usually surrounded by trees it can land on any branch and look like a dead leaf avoiding birds.
