Fun Lesson Activity about The Manatee
Manatees are slow and graceful swimmers that live in coastal and river waters around the world. They have earned their nickname as sea cow because they love to eat. A manatee can eat a 10th of their own body weight in seaweed, grasses, and algae in only 24 hours. These peaceful animals also have no known predators. Sadly they are still vulnerable to endangerment due to human activity. Have students list some human factors that may be dangerous to manatees. Some of these would include powerboats, pollution, and habitat destruction. Encourage them to brainstorm things humans can do to help these friendly creatures.
