Fun Lesson Activity about The Kingfisher

To make an environment for a kingfisher bird, first, cut out fish shapes from sheets of styrofoam. Then, lay out a long sheet of blue paper on the floor. Draw wavy lines across it to simulate a river. Lay the styrofoam fish across the river. Next, give the children markers, and let them color the fish however they want. Then, as the children sit by the “river,” teach them basic information about the kingfisher bird. For example, they live near streams, rivers, and lakes. Or they are great at fishing. Also, they have a very sharp beak that they use to spear the fish they want to eat. Next, give each child one chopstick. Tell them to use their chopstick to spear the fish as a kingfisher would use its beak to do so. Challenge the kids to go home and share one thing they learned about kingfishers with someone.
