Fun Lesson Activity about The Killer Whale

Objective: The objective of this lesson is for students to learn about the pros and cons of animals in captivity.

Materials: Several different pictures of killer whales.

Instructions: Begin by showing a picture of a killer whale to the class and asking them if they have ever seen this animal before. After a discussion, ask if any student has been to Sea World. Explain to the students that while having the Orcas at Sea World is a really cool thing, it is actually harmful to the whale’s health for these reasons: 1. Orcas normal life expectances in the wild is 60-70 years while Orcas in captivity only live to 9 years of age despite being fed properly 2. There has never been an incident of an Orca killing a human in the wild but captive orcas have killed 3 humans since 1991 3. Every captive male has a dorsal fin that is collapsed or flops to the side. This has never been reported in the wild. It may be a sign of depression 4. Orcas in the wild normally swim 100 miles a day while Orcas in captivity are confined to tiny tanks. 5. Orcas normally live in groups of whales called pods, which can be 15 to several hundred whales. In captivity they are forced to live by themselves. Have students write a response on the ethics of Sea World and animals in captivity in general. Have them write about the Pros and Cons of having animals and captivity and whether they believe it is ethically right.
