Fun Lesson Activity about The Hound Dog
Before you begin the activity, give the children background about how hound dogs were originally bred to hunt small animals, such as rabbits. Explain that the hound dogs were able to hunt animals because of their great sense of smell. Then, put the children’s sense of smell to the test. Set up five stations, and put a different item at each station. The items should have a smell to them. Use items, such as food or candles. Put a box over each item, and cut a small hole in the back of the box. One at a time, blindfold the children, and have them smell the item through the hole in the back. Then, ask them to write down on a sheet of paper what they think the smell is. Once all of the children have written down the smell for all five items, ask them to share some of the things they wrote down. Then, show them what each item was, and ask how many of them were able to get each one right. Are their noses better than a hound dog’s?
