Fun Lesson Activity about The Cockatoo

First, show the children what a cockatoo looks like, and ask them to draw their own cockatoo on a sheet of paper but without the feathers on top of the head. Once the children have finished drawing and coloring their cockatoo, give them all a handful of white feathers. Explain to the children that a cockatoo’s crest feathers can be used to communicate with other cockatoos or indicate how they are feeling. For example, if the feathers are raised above their head into the air, then the cockatoo is feeling watchful, excited, or aroused. Let the children decide how they want to glue the crest feathers onto the heads of their cockatoo. The feathers can be fully raised, slightly raised, or not raised at all. Once they finish, ask each child, one at a time, to share their cockatoo with the other children. Have them explain why their feathers are raised, slightly raised, or not raised at all. For example, a child who glued the feathers to be slightly raised may say that their cockatoo just woke up and is trying to warm up. Or a child who glued the feathers down may say that their cockatoo is eating dinner.
