To make a black widow, give each child eight small black pipe cleaners, which will be the black widow’s legs, a jumbo black cotton ball, which will be its body, and googly eyes. Demonstrate for the children how to attach the pipe cleaners as legs to the body of the spider. Next, have them glue on the eyes to the body of the spider. Once each child finishes their spider, ask them to draw and color a red hourglass figure on a piece of paper, and then, cut it out. Then, tell them to place it on the belly of the black widow. After each child completes the task correctly, explain to them that the red hourglass shape helps to identify a black widow. Identify places where a black widow may be hiding, and tell them that if they were to ever see one, then they should stay away from it and notify an adult because they are poisonous.
