Fun Lesson Activity about The Ant
Objective: To illustrate to students how much weight an ant can lift.
Materials: If possible a life-size school bus. If not, then a car or pick-up truck.
Instructions: Begin by showing a picture of a worker ant carrying some sort of object. Tell the class that the ant is an amazing creature because of how much weight it can lift. An average ant can lift 5,000 times its body weight. This means that a person who weights 100 lbs. (average student) would have to lift something that weights 50,000 lbs. to be the same in strength as a worker ant. Take the students outside and show them the life-size school bus. Tell them that it weights approximately 50,000 lbs. Then ask one of the students to life the bus on their own. This would be the exact ration of what worker ants sometimes lift.
